EN · The closing day of the POPULIST-GAMEMODE 2026 annual conference is devoted to a demonstrative student debate. Two teams take opposing positions on a single contested motion concerning populism, manipulative communication and democratic resilience in the European Union. The exercise is not competitive in the conventional sense – there is no winning side, no league table. Instead, it is a structured public demonstration of how arguments are built, examined and rebutted, in front of an audience of students, faculty and guests of the conference.
RO · Ultima zi a conferinței anuale POPULIST-GAMEMODE 2026 este dedicată unei dezbateri studențești demonstrative. Două echipe susțin poziții opuse pe o singură moțiune contestată privind populismul, comunicarea manipulativă și reziliența democratică în Uniunea Europeană. Exercițiul nu este competitiv în sensul obișnuit – nu există tabără câștigătoare, nu există clasament. Este, mai degrabă, o demonstrație publică structurată a felului în care se construiesc, se examinează și se demontează argumentele, în fața unui auditoriu format din studenți, cadre didactice și invitați ai conferinței.
The motion
Moțiunea ediției 2026
Acest Parlament consideră că ascensiunea populismului este un simptom necesar și benefic pentru corectarea democrațiilor liberale stagnante.
This House believes that the rise of populism is a necessary and beneficial symptom for correcting stagnant liberal democracies.
RO · Formularea moțiunii este deliberat provocatoare. Ea îi obligă pe vorbitori să iasă din reflexul condamnării imediate a populismului și să se confrunte cu o ipoteză incomodă: că tensiunea pe care populismul o introduce în sistemele democratice ar putea avea, sub anumite condiții, un rol corectiv. Sarcina echipei PRO nu este să apere populismul ca atare, ci să argumenteze această ipoteză cu rigoare; sarcina echipei CONTRA nu este să respingă superficial, ci să demonstreze unde și de ce această ipoteză eșuează.
EN · The wording is deliberately provocative. It forces speakers to step out of the reflex of immediate condemnation and confront an uncomfortable hypothesis: that the strain populism introduces into democratic systems may, under certain conditions, play a corrective role. The PRO team is not asked to defend populism as such, but to argue this hypothesis rigorously; the CONTRA team is not asked for superficial dismissal, but to show where and why the hypothesis fails.
How the debate is structured

EN · Speakers are split into two opposing teams, PRO (Proposition) and CONTRA (Opposition), debating in the World Schools Debate format, 3×3 variant – three speakers per team, three timed substantive speeches per side, alternating between the two benches, followed by a reply speech from each team. Each speaker is given a set time to present, develop and defend a line of argument; the audience is invited to follow not the verdict, but the architecture of reasoning – how each side constructs its case, where it draws the line, and how it responds to challenge.
RO · Vorbitorii sunt împărțiți în două echipe opuse, PRO (Propunere) și CONTRA (Opoziție), confruntându-se în format World Schools Debate (WSD), varianta 3×3 – câte trei vorbitori per echipă, trei intervenții substanțiale cronometrate per tabără, alternând între cele două bănci, urmate de câte o intervenție de replică din partea fiecărei echipe. Fiecare vorbitor are un timp dat pentru a prezenta, dezvolta și apăra o linie de argument; publicul este invitat să urmărească nu un verdict, ci arhitectura raționamentului – cum își construiește fiecare tabără cazul, unde își trasează limita și cum răspunde provocării.
The Argumentum Debate Club
Clubul de Debate – Argumentum
EN · Argumentum is the student debate club of the Faculty of History and Philosophy at Babeș-Bolyai University, founded in 2025 by a group of master students with the support of teaching staff working on European integration, communication and political analysis. The club trains its members in argument construction, public speaking and structured rebuttal across formats inspired by the World Schools Debate tradition. The Day 3 demonstration is one of its first major public appearances within an international academic event.
RO · Argumentum este clubul studențesc de debate al Facultății de Istorie și Filosofie din Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai, fondat în 2025 de un grup de masteranzi cu sprijinul cadrelor didactice care lucrează pe integrare europeană, comunicare și analiză politică. Clubul își formează membrii în construcția argumentului, vorbire publică și replică structurată, pe formate inspirate de tradiția World Schools Debate. Demonstrația de pe Ziua 3 este una dintre primele lui apariții publice majore în interiorul unui eveniment academic internațional.
